Significance of Christmas

THOUGHT FOR CONTEMPLATION
The recently concluded Christmas has much more significance than merely a day of religious celebrations.Though it is true that Christmas is celebrated as the day of the Birth of Christ into this world, yet it also symbolizes a very deep significant truth of the spiritual life. Jesus Christ is the very personification of Divinity. He was born at a time when ignorance, superstition, greed, hatred and hypocrisy prevailed all over the world. Purity was forgotten and morality was neglected. Human beings were trapped under the darkness of ignorance.
In that period human beings had no thought of God or higher spiritual life. They lived a life of lust, anger, greed, deluded attachment, pride and jealousy. For them to enter into a new life of spiritual aspiration, purity and devotion, the divine light had to manifest itself. This manifestation took place in the form of Christ. The birth of Christ is basically the birth of pure spirit in the hearts of people. That is the real Christmas when the Divine element begins to express itself in the heart of the man. From then onward, light begins to shine where darkness was before.
The life of Jesus Christ depicts that he is both human as well as God. He has himself gone through the whole of human experience, from the trivial irritations to the worst horrors of pain and humiliation, defeat, despair and death. Jesus is a great spiritual teacher and a compassionate lover of sinners too, a man who strives for peace and someone who understand humans better than anyone; the greatest man who ever lived, the great God who came to us.
Jesus signifies light of divine knowledge and his birth in the darkness of night signifies removal of darkness of ignorance by the light of knowledge. When the sinners crucified Him, He prayed for His tormentors, saying, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do."
Thus Jesus taught humans to forgive and forget and pray for the well being of everybody including the ignorant enemies and trouble givers. Pure unconditional love is the essence of his teachings.
The sufferings of Jesus Christ are taken as an epitome of sacrifice a man can make for humanity. Crucifixion signifies that good will always prevail over evil however much one tries to kill it or suppress it. Even after the crucifixion of the physical body of Jesus, the divine power resurrected and remained alive.
Jesus Christ will not be happy just by celebrating Christmas with all the pomp and show, dance and drinks and distribution of gifts but will be happy if we follow what he has taught us. He has not taken birth to get recognition from human beings for his Godly status but for establishing Godliness in the hearts of human beings. Let us follow some these basic principles of His teachings so that we are proud to celebrate next year?s Christmas as a genuine son of the Divine Father.
1. Serve all beings with equality and humility.
2. Let unconditional love flow from the heart.
3. Forgive everybody, including enemies from the core of your heart.
4. Pray for everybody?s well being including trouble makers and pain givers.
5. Let sufferings do not disturb our inner peace.
6. Let the presence of God be felt in our heart and in every other heart with whom we deal.
7. Let our goodness not allowed to be killed or suppressed in any situation.
8. Accept every situation of life and death with open arms (as signified by the Cross).
