Spiritual significance of Good Friday and Easter
Date : 25 Apr 2011
THOUGHT FOR CONTEMPLATION
Christians across the world commemorate Jesus' arrest, trial, crucifixion and death as Good Friday and the following Sunday as Easter when Jesus resurrected i.e. when he rose again from the dead.Four spiritual aspects could be understood from crucifixion and resurrection and they are:
1. Unconditional love
3. Life after death
4. Power of Faith
Jesus' unconditional love, selfless service and divine teachings made his followers realize the purpose of life, freedom from wrong notions and the existence of supreme divine God. He taught them that in spite of life containing happiness or sorrow, success or failure, riches or poverty, sickness or health, God has a purpose of your life and is interested in your life. His teachings and love cleansed the hearts of his followers. This cleansing freed his followers from their sins. The debt of these sins, he is considered to have unhesitatingly, taken upon himself through crucifixion. In spite of not doing anything wrong or committing any crime he took the highest punishment of sins on himself.
Jesus taught us to forgive all those who give us pain, troubles, losses, sorrows, as under ignorance they do not know what they are doing. When we forgive we get freed from the bondage of deeds (Karma) and thus get liberated from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth and unconscious revengeful acts.
Jesus prayed to God during his crucifixion, to forgive all those who had turned on Him and those who had carried out His execution. He prayed "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do"
Jesus actually spoke in their defense, and in doing so, proved in the most powerful way possible that He believed what He had taught: "Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you."
Life after death
The resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday is to prove that there is life after death. He rose from the dead in his divine body to continue to serve and protect his followers. After death He transcended the limitations of the physical gross body, thus also transcending the natural laws of the world. He could make himself visible or invisible at any place at his own free will, walk on water, feed any number of hungry people to their full stomach even with small quantity of food and cure diseases with just a divine touch.
The message here is that those who live a good and righteous life rise to go to heaven and those who lead a wrongful life would go to hell. One will reap what one would sow.
Power of Faith
Once Jesus sent his disciples ahead of him in a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee. Several hours later in the night, the disciples encountered a storm. Jesus comes to them, walking on the water. This terrifies the disciples and they think they are seeing a ghost. Jesus tells them, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
Peter replies, "Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water." So Jesus invites Peter to come. Peter gets out of the boat and begins walking toward Jesus. But when Peter takes his eyes off Jesus and realizes he is walking on the water, he begins to sink. Peter cries out to the Lord and Jesus immediately reaches out his hand and catches Peter.
The message in this particular incident is that till one is focused on God without Ego and with unshakeable faith, one is protected from difficulties of life but the moment one develops the ego of doership, one sinks in the ocean of the world. And only when one calls God for help, God rescues him.
If these four important spiritual aspects, learned through the life of Jesus, are practiced by anybody irrespective of one's faith and religion, one will lead a life full of peace, happiness and God realization. And they are (1) Unconditional Love (2) Forgiveness (3) Faith in God (4) Life after Death.
